Video-Based Magnet Operation Tutorial

The following outline provides short descriptions and example video clips illustrating the procedures necessary to install and operate an AMI-provided superconducting magnet. The videos are not intended as a replacement for the provided printed manuals. The intent is to further clarify the required steps for installing and operating a superconducting magnet for inexperienced customers. Click the video clip icon to open a video. DSL, T1, or cable modem bandwidth connection recommended for real-time viewing.

Page 1: Unpacking the Delivered Items

Delivered Items
The delivered items for a superconducting magnet system include the crated dewar, the magnet (often shipped in a cooler), and the electronic instrumentation in one or more boxes.
Unpack the Dewar
The dewar is delivered in a wooden crate. To unpack the dewar:
  1. Remove the screws on one side of the crate.
  2. Remove the freed crate panel.
  3. Connect a hoist to the dewar and remove it from the crate (or carefully remove the dewar from the crate using multiple persons).
  4. Remove all packing foam from the top and bottom of dewar.

Unpack the Magnet
The magnet is typically packed in a cooler. To unpack the magnet:
  1. Open the cooler and remove all loose materials.
  2. Remove the magnet from the cooler.
  3. Remove the packing materials surrounding the magnet.
  4. Remove the packing materials covering the top portion of the magnet.
Remove the Support Stand
The support stand must be removed from the dewar in order to connect the superconducting magnet.
