LabVIEW Drivers for AMI Magnet Systems Version 2.0 4/14/2003 The included drivers are designed to operate with LabVIEW version 6.1 or higher, and require a LabVIEW-supported GPIB card. The default install location is an "AMI" folder within the "User.lib" folder of your LabVIEW installation. The hierarchy of files is important for proper operation. The installation package is designed for PCs running Windows 9x, ME, NT 4, 2000, or XP. The virtual instruments (VI) should be compatible with LabVIEW installations on other operating systems, but you will need to contact AMI to determine an appropriate distribution method. One solution could be to first install to a PC and then copy the AMI folder to another LabVIEW platform. Drivers and example integrated panels are included for the AMI Model 420 Digital Power Supply Programmer, the AMI 135 Liquid Helium Level Monitor, the Neocera LTC-21 Temperature Controller, and the Lakeshore Model 332 Temperature Controller. ROM version 2.0 or later is required in the AMI Model 420 to use these drivers without modification. The ROM version is displayed by the Model 420 when first powered on. The "example" VI's illustrate one way to use the lower level VI's for each instrument in an integrated control panel. The user may customize the examples or develop a custom panel to perform the specific actions required by an experiment. The VI's are self-documenting. You can discover details about the exact function of the VI by exploring the contents of each. All provided VI's (with the exception of the Model 135) use the "Common VIs" for the lowest level of GPIB communication. Only a subset of commands for the Model 420, Neocera LTC-21, or Lakeshore Model 332 are currently supported. However, note that the Command and Query VI's for the instruments can be easily customized by simply modifying the command string sent to the instrument as well as the input control types and labels. Included is a short description of each example VI: Current Example.vi - Requires connection via GPIB to an AMI Model 420. It provides an example of controlling current in a superconducting magnet. Field Example.vi - Identical to the previous VI, except the control and display are in units of kilogauss. Field and Temp (LTC-21) Example.vi - Requires connection via GPIB to an AMI Model 420 and Neocera LTC-21. It provides an example of controlling the field in a magnet, and monitoring/controlling a single temperature. Field and Temp (332) Example.vi - Requires connection via GPIB to an AMI Model 420 and Lakeshore Model 332. It provides an example of controlling the field in a magnet, and monitoring/controlling a single temperature. Also open the Set 332 Tuning.vi to interactively adjust the tuning while monitoring/controlling. Field, Temp (LTC-21), and Level Example.vi - Requires connection via GPIB to an AMI Model 420, AMI Model 135, and Neocera LTC-21. It provides an example of controlling the field in a magnet, monitoring/controlling a temperature, and monitoring the liquid helium level in a dewar. Automatic rampdown of the magnet is initiated if the low level alarm of the AMI Model 135 is triggered. Field, Temp (332), and Level Example.vi - Requires connection via GPIB to an AMI Model 420, AMI Model 135, and Lakeshore Model 332. It provides an example of controlling the field in a magnet, monitoring/controlling a temperature, and monitoring the liquid helium level in a dewar. Automatic rampdown of the magnet is initiated if the low level alarm of the AMI Model 135 is triggered. Known problems: 1) If the "GPIB Error Report.vi" is not located automatically during loading of a VI, you can manually locate it in the location: LABVIEW/EXAMPLES/INSTR/SMPLGPIB.LLB which is included with the standard LabVIEW distribution. The AMI drivers may be uninstalled by using the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs feature. If you have questions, contact: Michael McCulloch American Magnetics, Inc.
