Radial Access Port Magnets
(Split Coils)

Magnets with radial access ports are constructed in two basic configurations and magnetic field orientations. These magnets can be manufactured for a helium (cold) bore or for vacuum (warm) bore installation. Either can be oriented with the magnetic field horizontal or vertical. The radial ports allow access perpendicular to the magnetic field.

The critical parameters in these magnets are the required field, field homogeneity and volume, and the radial access port diameter. The axial bore diameter, outside diameter, and the magnet current are dependent upon these parameters. Achievable fields and field homogeneities are generally lower in split coils designs, which are required for radial access, than in solenoids. For a given field and field homogeneity, the dimensions of the magnet increase with the diameter of the radial access port. The lengths of the bore tubes are adjusted to the cryostat to be used with the magnet. Many variations on radial access designs are possible, and your request for a design to meet specific constraints or requirements is welcome.

The model number of our radial access port magnets are descriptive of the parameters most frequently of interest to and specified by the user. It consists of the following components:

CH 70 05 - 3
Magnet Type:
CH = Cold Bore, Horizontal Field
CV = Cold Bore, Vertical Field
VH = Vacuum Bore, Horizontal Field
VV = Vacuum Bore, Vertical Field
Peak central magnetic field specified in kilogauss or tenths of Tesla (e.g. 70 = 70 kilogauss or 7.0 Tesla). Nominal radial access bore size specified in tenths of inches, sized such that a cylinder of the specified diameter will fit into the radial access port (see table below for std. sizes). Field homogeneity, expressed as ±% in a 1 cm Diameter Spherical Volume (DSV) at the center of the solenoid.

1 = ±1.0% in 1 cm DSV
2 = ±0.5% in 1 cm DSV
3 = ±0.1% in 1 cm DSV

The radial access port magnet in the above table is a cold bore, horizontal field magnet with 7.0 Tesla peak central field standard solenoid, a 0.5 inch radial access bore size, and a homogeneity of ±0.1% in a 1 cm DSV on the magnetic axis at the center of the magnet.

The model numbers for standard radial access port magnets are listed below:
